Living to Make Art

McMinnville Education Foundation provides the funds to pay a guest artist’s salary and supplies that the students are able to keep through the sponsored Artist-in-Residence program.

Artist Jessica Campbell works with 4th-grade and 5th-grade classes across the district. The 4th graders discovered the art of totem poles. The 5th grader studied the work of Frida Kahlo as they went through the process of creating self-portraits.

Beyond learning a bit about symbolism and how to mix paint to create just the right shade, students learned about how having a growth mindset can help you continue even when you feel like giving up.

We see a bright future for these young student artists!

A student in Tara Romero’s 5th-grade class at Newby Elementary School thanked Mrs. Campbell for teaching his class on zoom.

One of Hayley Hook’s 4th-grade class at Columbus Elementary School shared her totem pole artwork and wrote why she selected the animals for her totem. “Lion: family, strength, energy, courage, guardian, protector. Flamingo: heart, healing, psychic people/person. Giraffe: communication, intuition, attaining the unreachable, seeing the future.”
